Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN)

The Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN, pronounced "season") was established in 1989 as a private, nonprofit corporation with members from leading universities and non-government research organizations. This site offers access to a unique data collection that has been designed to facilitate a wide range of natural science and socioeconomic research and educational activities. You will find a variety of socioeconomic data in this site, including Geographic Information System (GIS) databases that cover the administrative regions of China, presented at a scale of 1:1,000,000. These databases may be integrated with agricultural, land use, environmental, and socioeconomic data to track China's economic growth, population increases, and environmental change. 1990 U.S. Census Lookup (U.S. Census Bureau)
LOOKUP is an experimental WWW server for retrieving data from the following 1990 U.S. Census Summary Tape Files:
1990 Census Summary Tape File 3 (STF3)
Sample count - all socioeconomic and demographic variables
  • STF3A -- Detailed geography - county, place, tract, etc.
  • STF3B -- ZIP codes.
  • STF3C - part 1 -- Nation and state totals, Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs).
  • STF3C - part 2 -- Urbanized Areas (UAs). Under construction.
1990 Census Summary Tape File 1 (STF1)
100% count - basic demographic variables
  • STF1A -- Detailed geography - county, place, tract, etc.
  • STF1C -- Nation and state totals. Not all tables are available.

Data Extraction Service (U.S. Census Bureau)

The Data Extraction System is a tool for extracting records (rows) and fields (columns) from very large, public-information, data files (for example: survey and census records.) The system produces custom extracts in selectable data file formats which, when processed, can then be picked up at the Census Bureau's FTP site. This system DOES NOT produce simple counts or tabulations. It produces ONLY RAW DATA which must then be processed by programming or statistical analysis software elsewhere. Available data sources are:
  1. (SIPP) Survey of Income and Program Participation
  2. (CPS) Current Population Survey
  3. (AHS) American Housing Survey
  4. (CES) Consumer Expenditure Survey (Sponsor BLS)
  5. (PUMS) Decennial Census Public Use Microdata Samples

Demographic Data Viewer

Provided by the Socioeconomic Data and Applications Center (SEDAC) and Consortium for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN), USA. DDViewer allows the user to: create maps at a multitude of geographic resolutions; interpret the image using the statistical summary report; customize the layout; create tabular reports; and create simple recodes of variables. Data: The boundary data were derived from the Bureau of the Census TIGER 1992 database. Boundaries are available for states, counties, census tracts, county subdivisions/minor civil divisions, and census blockgroups. Demographic data available for mapping was derived from the Bureau of the Census STF3A 1990. Roughly 225 variables are selectable either for mapping purposes or can be printed in tabular reports. Map layouts, colors, legends and titles can by customized by the user. A recoding option is provided enabling the creation of user defined variables.
Tiger Mapping Service (U.S. Census Bureau)
The goal of this service is to provide a public resource for generating high-quality, detailed maps of anywhere in the United States, using public geographic data.
U.S. Gazeteer (U.S. Census Bureau)
This gazetteer is used to identify places to view with the Tiger Map Server and obtain census data from the 1990 Census Lookup server. You can search for places, counties or MCDs by entering the name and state abbreviation (optional), or 5-digit zip code.
