Business MeetingJanuary 8, 2000 Boston, Massachusetts Presiding: Willene Johnson, NEA President
I. Minutes Approved II. Secretary - Treasurer Report There are currently 111 paid members, which is a decline from 1998 when there were 132 (14 students). This is despite an intensive mailing campaign. We had four issues of the job placement bulletin and also some special issues. Most of these issues are now posted on the list server. Our revenue fell by $300. Academic and nonprofit organizations get the mailing list at no charge. We have an account balance of $7,513 after expenditures, with a negative operating balance of $716. Our CD is valued at $32,000 with total assets equaling $38,000. Ill. Report of the Review of Black Political Economy - Danny Boston Mailing was handled by Rushden and was distributed to membership lists of several other organizations, not ours (concerns regarding Transactions). Danny stated that he would report on (a) the review and on (b) our meeting regarding the Rushden affair. (a) Completed and submitted 6 issues for the 25th anniversary edition, which is an increase in regular submissions. We also had an improvement in the quality of regular submissions. We had 691 in circulation, which is an improvement. The breakdown of the circulation is as follows: 486 institutional subscribers - 474 domestic and 12 foreign, 185 to individual NEA members, 30 nonmembers, remaining to foreign individuals. We also received 27 manuscripts in 1999. Ten were accepted for publication and 4 are at the revise and resubmit level. There were a total of 14 manuscripts accepted, including four from the previous year. The rejection rate is about 20%. (b) Transaction now has online service. Some journals have been placed online who have subscribed to online service. Organizations have access to those journals, which are Society, Current Psychology, and Academic Questions.
