Susan Williams McElroy , Ph.D, University of Texas at Dallas

Susan Williams McElroy, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Economics and Education Policy at The
University of Texas at Dallas (UTD), holding a tenured faculty appointment in the School of Economic, Political, and Policy Sciences at UTD. Prior to joining UTD, Susan was an Assistant Professor at the H. John Heinz III School of Public Policy and Management at Carnegie Mellon University. At Carnegie Mellon, she held the Dean’s Career Development Chair in Economics and Education, a term endowed chair. Susan received her Ph.D. in Economics of Education from Stanford University in 1996. She also holds Master’s degrees in Economics and Latin American Studies from Stanford University. She received her bachelor’s degree in Public and International Affairs from Princeton University. As a researcher, she is primarily interested in economic inequality and the role of education in economic status. In that context, she has conducted research on the economics of education, the economic and social consequences of teenage pregnancy and childbearing, and poverty and economic inequality. Susan has been active with the National Economic Association for a number of years and is currently serving her third term on the Board of Directors. She chaired the planning committee for the Westerfield Award Luncheon held in Boston, Massachusetts in January 2006, which was a successful fundraiser for the NEA. She previously served on the Board of Directors of Housing Opportunities, a housing counseling and finance agency in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania region and received the Susan Sherrod Volunteer of the Year Award in 2000.
